In
this photo, astronomers at the Space Telescope Science Institute
anxiously await results from the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy
9 with the planet Jupiter in July 1994. The institute is responsible
for carrying out daily observations and ensuring that professional
astronomers worldwide have access to the world's foremost observatory.
Typically, the institute receives more than 1,000 proposals
a year and selects about 300.
