This
photo shows an astronaut holding a reel-to-reel tape recorder
prior to stowing it for return to the ground. It was replaced
by a new solid-state data recorder. Hubble uses data recorders
to store engineering and science data that cannot be sent to
the ground in real time. When communications permit, ground
controllers command a recorder playback to send the data to
the ground for processing.
