These
monstrous pillar-like structures are actually columns of cool
hydrogen gas and dust that protrude like stalagmites on a cavern
floor. Although wondrous in appearance, the structures actually
are incubators for new stars and are located in the Eagle Nebula
7,000 light-years from Earth.
