At
one time, the end of a Sun-like star's life was thought to be
simple. The star cast off a shell of gas and then settled into
a long retirement as a burned-out white dwarf. This collection
of images reveals a far more complicated situation as evidenced
by the elegant and intricate shapes and patterns of these dying
stars.
