About this image

Ever since its launch in 1990, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has been expanding our cosmic horizons. Hubble has revealed with incredible clarity the beauty, wonder, and complexity of the universe.

On February 1, 2017, the stunning new exhibition "Our Place in Space" will open in Venice, Italy, presenting not only a breathtaking pictorial journey through our solar system and to the edges of the known universe, but also Hubble-inspired works by selected Italian artists.

The new traveling exhibition will be on display through April 17, 2017, in the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti, on the banks of the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. By seamlessly integrating perspectives from both artists and astronomers, the exhibition will inspire visitors to think deeply about how humanity fits into the grand scheme of the universe.

The exhibition taps into the fervent imaginations of prominent Italian artists, who have produced pieces inspired by Hubble's observations. A combination of images and artworks enable visitors to experience the different perspectives of astronomers and artists as they grapple with Hubble's evocative images. The fusion of science and art provides a unique symbiosis of our view of the cosmos.

After being on display in Venice, the exhibition will be shown in Chiavenna, Italy, from May 5 to August 31, 2017. It will be hosted at the Palazzo Vertemate and other nearby places. Afterwards, it will be put on display in Garching, Germany, in the ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Center. Further stops in other European countries, the USA, and even Australia are planned.
