Compass Image for NGC 6397
NGC 6397 is located 7,800 light-years away from Earth.
The image is 6.5 arcmin across (about 15 light-years).
The HST observations include those from program 10257 (J. Anderson/STScI).
The HST observations from the study include those from program 13817 (T. Brown/STScI) taken with WFC3 between September 2014 and September 2016 using filters F336W, F467M, F547M, F606W, and F850LP.
These images are a composite of separate exposures acquired by the ACS/WFC instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. Several filters were used to sample narrow wavelength ranges. The color results from assigning different hues (colors) to each monochromatic (grayscale) image associated with an individual filter. In this case, the assigned colors are:
