Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1300

A milky yellow, very flattened oval extends nearly horizontally across the middle of the image. From the right end of the oval, a swath of blue stars speckled with pink regions wraps up and around the oval in a counterclockwise direction. From the left end of the oval, another swath of blue stars speckled with pink regions wraps down and around the oval in a clockwise direction. Both the oval and the two prominent spiral arms are festooned with dark streaks of dust. At the galaxy’s center, the dust swirls in a spiral pattern.
